Shingles Vaccine (over 50s)

Painful rash caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox virus).

Recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix) is used for adults over 50 years or younger immunocompromised.

Age Eligibility

From 65 years or younger if immunocompromised,

Administration

2 intramuscular doses 2 - 6 months apart.

Booster

Not required after 2-dose course.

Possible Side effects

Pain at site, fever, fatigue, headache.

Risk if Contracted

Severe nerve pain, post-herpetic neuralgia.

Aftercare

Monitor side effects, rest, use of analgesia.

Additional Information

Highly effective in reducing shingles and long-term pain.
